Taking BoxLang Everywhere: Modernizing Web Applications and Expanding Practical AI in El Salvador! 🚀
In partnership with El Salvador’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ortus Solutions created a space for business leaders, technology teams, universities, professionals, and developers to explore how modern tools can improve productivity, extend existing applications, and make AI adoption more practical.
At Ortus Solutions, we believe organizations should be able to modernize their technology without abandoning everything they have already built.
That belief is at the core of BoxLang.
As we continue introducing BoxLang to companies, institutions, and technology communities around the world, we recently brought that mission to El Salvador through the free masterclass “Construye aplicaciones reales con IA,” or “Build Real Applications with AI.”
The event was developed in partnership with El Salvador’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and led by Luis Majano, a Salvadoran-American engineer and technology entrepreneur, Founder and CEO of Ortus Solutions, and creator of BoxLang and BoxLang AI.
The masterclass generated 220 registrations from business leaders, SMEs, technology teams, professionals, university representatives, students, and developers interested in understanding how modern software and artificial intelligence can improve their applications, processes, and operations.
For Luis, the event was also an opportunity to bring nearly two decades of international technology experience back to El Salvador and connect it with local organizations, institutions, professionals, and future technology leaders.
Creating Spaces to Learn Before Implementing
Artificial intelligence is receiving global attention, but implementing it successfully remains challenging for many organizations.
Companies may understand its potential while still asking important questions:
- Where should we begin?
- Which processes could benefit from automation or AI?
- Can we add new capabilities to the applications we already use?
- How do we protect sensitive business information?
- Which model or provider should we choose?
- How can we avoid becoming dependent on one technology vendor?
The masterclass was designed to help participants explore those questions through practical education, real examples, and direct conversations.
Rather than beginning with a specific tool or the most popular AI model, Luis encouraged organizations to begin with the business problem they want to solve, the information and systems they already have, and the outcome they want to achieve.
This approach helps companies move beyond experimentation and identify focused use cases that can improve productivity, reduce repetitive work, strengthen access to information, or create better experiences for employees and customers.
Our partnership with El Salvador’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs made it possible to create an accessible space where companies, professionals, universities, students, and developers could explore these opportunities together.
These initiatives are part of a broader effort to expand access to modern web development and practical AI knowledge, helping more Salvadoran organizations understand how these technologies can be implemented responsibly and progressively.
Modernizing the Web Applications Organizations Already Depend On
Many organizations rely on web applications that contain years of business logic, customer information, workflows, integrations, and operational knowledge.
As those applications age, introducing new functionality can become slower, more expensive, and increasingly difficult. At the same time, completely replacing a critical system can create significant cost, risk, and disruption.
BoxLang provides a more flexible path.
BoxLang is a modern, dynamic, modular, and multi-runtime language and application platform for the Java Virtual Machine. It is designed to work with existing Java libraries, JVM technologies, infrastructure, and technical expertise.
Instead of forcing organizations to rebuild their applications from the ground up, BoxLang can be introduced progressively to extend current systems and add modern capabilities according to each organization’s priorities.
Technology teams can use BoxLang to:
- Extend and modernize existing web applications.
- Build APIs and microservices.
- Connect new platforms and services.
- Automate repetitive workflows.
- Introduce cloud and serverless capabilities.
- Add modern features without replacing an entire application.
- Improve developer productivity through a more expressive development experience.
BoxLang’s multi-runtime architecture also gives teams the freedom to build across web applications, APIs, serverless functions, command-line tools, desktop software, embedded environments, and browser-based experiences through WebAssembly.
For business and technology leaders, this means greater flexibility to evolve existing systems, protect previous investments, and scale applications as operational needs change.
Increasing Productivity Through Modern Development Tools
Modernization is not only about replacing old technology. It is also about helping people work more effectively.
Development teams often lose valuable time managing unnecessary complexity, maintaining disconnected tools, or working around limitations in legacy systems.
BoxLang is designed to provide a more productive and cohesive development experience while preserving access to the established Java and JVM ecosystem.
Its dynamic syntax can help teams write and maintain applications more efficiently, while its interoperability allows them to continue using existing libraries, infrastructure, and technical knowledge.
This gives organizations more freedom to choose how they build, where they deploy, and how quickly they introduce new functionality.
The objective is not to modernize for the sake of following a trend. It is to help technology teams deliver value faster and help organizations adapt their applications without creating unnecessary disruption.
Adding AI to Existing Applications and Processes
During the event, Luis also introduced BoxLang AI, which extends the BoxLang ecosystem with a unified way to integrate multiple artificial intelligence models and providers.
Organizations can work with cloud-based or locally hosted models to build:
- AI agents.
- Intelligent search experiences.
- Retrieval-augmented generation systems.
- Document-processing workflows.
- Automated pipelines.
- Internal knowledge assistants.
- AI-powered features within existing applications.
This allows companies to begin with a specific operational need, such as reducing manual work, improving access to internal knowledge, accelerating customer service, or supporting employee productivity.
BoxLang AI also gives organizations the freedom to select the model or provider that best fits each use case.
The right choice may depend on privacy, security, cost, infrastructure, performance, availability, or the sensitivity of the information involved. Instead of designing an entire application around one AI vendor, companies can evaluate, combine, or change providers as their requirements evolve.
This flexibility helps organizations adopt AI without giving up control over their applications or long-term technology strategy.
“Artificial intelligence creates real value when it becomes a natural part of the applications and processes organizations already use. With BoxLang AI, we designed an open and flexible platform that allows companies to adopt AI securely and select the model or provider that best meets their needs without being limited to a single technology. Our goal is to make enterprise AI practical, accessible, and capable of producing real results from day one.”
Luis Majano, Founder and CEO of Ortus Solutions and creator of BoxLang and BoxLang AI
The session concluded with a practical demonstration showing how AI agents can connect information, automate tasks, expand the capabilities of existing applications, and support team productivity.
A Modern and Approachable Platform
The response from participants reinforced why educational spaces like this matter.
Business representatives, technology professionals, students, and university leaders described BoxLang and BoxLang AI as modern, innovative, and approachable.
Participants explored how the platform could help organizations improve internal processes, build new digital services, automate repetitive work, and extend existing applications without discarding their current systems.
Technology teams asked how BoxLang could be introduced progressively into web applications they already maintain.
Other conversations explored possible applications in robotics, automation, digital assets, blockchain technologies, and the security and privacy considerations involved in implementing AI.
Representatives from Salvadoran universities also expressed interest in using BoxLang, artificial intelligence, and professional open-source technologies to support practical student projects and expand access to modern development tools.
These conversations gave us the opportunity not only to present BoxLang, but also to listen directly to the needs, concerns, and ambitions of organizations and technology professionals in El Salvador.
Salvadoran-American Leadership Connecting Global Experience with El Salvador
As a Salvadoran-American engineer and technology entrepreneur, Luis Majano has spent nearly two decades building professional open-source products, enterprise software, and international technology communities.
His trajectory reflects the impact Salvadoran professionals can create internationally while continuing to share knowledge, build relationships, and create opportunities connected to El Salvador.
Bringing BoxLang and BoxLang AI to the country was therefore more than a product presentation.
It was an opportunity to connect experience developed across international markets with Salvadoran businesses, institutions, universities, professionals, students, and developers seeking stronger digital capabilities.
During the event, Patricia Nathaly GodĂnez, Vice Minister of Diaspora and Human Mobility, recognized Luis’s professional trajectory as an example of Salvadoran talent and perseverance with international impact.
She also highlighted the importance of strengthening knowledge in artificial intelligence and web development, developing human capital, generating new business opportunities, and continuing to position El Salvador as a destination for technology development and investment.
The Embassy of El Salvador in Washington, D.C., also played an important role in establishing the relationship with Ortus Solutions and helping make this collaboration possible.
Building Trust Through Education and Collaboration
At Ortus Solutions, we believe technology adoption begins with understanding.
Before asking organizations to invest in a new platform, we want business leaders and technology teams to understand what it does, why it matters, and how it can support their specific goals.
That is why education, practical demonstrations, open-source access, documentation, training, and direct conversations are central to how we are growing BoxLang.
For 20 years, Ortus Solutions has helped organizations build applications, modernize critical systems, improve development processes, automate operations, and adopt emerging technologies.
Our work combines professional open source with enterprise consulting, implementation, technical support, architecture, training, documentation, and long-term product development.
BoxLang represents the evolution of that experience.
It is a platform designed to help organizations preserve what already works, modernize what limits their growth, improve developer productivity, and introduce new capabilities without unnecessary disruption.
Taking BoxLang Everywhere
The El Salvador masterclass is part of our broader commitment to bring BoxLang to more organizations, institutions, conferences, and technology communities around the world.
We are not simply asking development teams to learn another programming language.
